ISTIH Chairman Adjunct Professor Michael Henderson recently met with Mr Soe Win, Secretary of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Burma’s pro-democratic Opposition party, the National League for Democracy.
Adjunct Professor Henderson briefed Mr Win with updates on ISTIH-supported projects in Emergency Medicine currently underway in Burma.
ISTIH has facilitated visits to Mandalay, Yangon and Nay Pyi Daw by a number of leading Australian emergency medicine specialists, including Melbourne-based Dr Georgina Phillips and ISTIH Medical Advisory Committee member, Associate Professor Dr Chris Curry. In June 2012, ISTIH supported the team delivering the first every Myanmar Emergency Medicine Introductory Course (MEMIC) at Yangon General Hospital, and continues to support Australasian clinicians delivering skills training and consulting on curriculum development and capacity building. Earlier this month, ISTIH sponsored leading Burmese surgeon, Associate Professor Moe Myint, to travel to Hobart for the annual Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Scientific Meeting.
Mr Soe Win was visiting Perth for this year’s In the Zone conference, held at the University of Western Australia on 26 and 27 November.
Adjunct Professor Henderson gave a presentation at In the Zone on 26 November, speaking alongside AusAID Director General Mr Peter Baxter at a session dedicated to capacity building in Asia through philanthropy, public diplomacy and partnerships.
ISTIH is committed to continued support for the development of Emergency Medicine in Burma, in close partnership with local Burmese institutions and community members.
